Yellowstone visitors take it slower. Sightseers choose leisurely tours on snowcoaches instead of snowmobiles

Winter forays into this land of wild animals and spouting geysers were dominated a few years ago by snowmobiles, whose noisy ballet sparked angry debate over whether they were damaging the nation’s first national park.
Now a growing number of park visitors are opting to view the spectacular surroundings from snowcoaches — vans on treads that travel over snow-covered roads. It’s happening at park gateways such as West Yellowstone, Mont., which bills itself as the “snowmobiling capital of the world.”
