Washington Governor calls few shots on state’s economy

CONTRARY TO popular opinion, as expressed in the ads of both gubernatorial candidates, governors have little control over the factors that most significantly determine how their state’s economy is doing.
They do not, for example, have a say on interest rates, or the price of a bushel of wheat or apples or a barrel of oil, or the direction of the stock market, or the performance of international economies that set demand for exports of this state’s products.
