The Downside of Network Upgrades

I wrote that title as if to imply that there is an upside to upgrading a small office network. There isn’t but the play on words was catchy.

We are undergoing our tri-annual (sometimes bi-annual) network upgrade at TechRanch. The network infrastructure industry is an absolute racket driven by marketing departments that sell fear, vulnerability and guilt to business managers, C-Level executives and board members. It is perpetuated by product developers who are inventing new ways to deal with irrelevant problems. And, it’s being fueled by buyers who don’t have the balls to say "bullshit." In many cases, the buyers – CIO’s – are in cahoots with this ugly process.
