Qwest seeks $350 million stimulus money for rural internet service

Qwest http://www.qwest.com is applying for $350 million in federal stimulus money to help extend high-speed Internet service to rural parts of the 14 states where it offers local phone service, including Montana.

Qwest proposes to extend broadband service with download speeds of 12 to 40 megabits per second to more than half a million homes, schools, businesses and hospitals.

The stimulus funds would come from the "broadband Initiatives Program" administered by the U-S Department of Agriculture Rural Utilities Service.
