Proposed budget could mean cuts for Gallatin County

A program designed to help offset costs incurred by local government could lose nearly $70 million under President Donald Trump’s current 2018 budget proposal.
The Payments in Lieu of Taxes, or PILT, program makes payments from the federal government to counties that contain federally owned land. According to the Department of Interior, local governments cannot collect property taxes on those land designations.
