Nampa, Idaho Swift meat processing plant closes, leaving 408 without jobs
Swift attributes closure to lack of cattle, market
More than 400 workers at a Nampa meat processing plant lost their jobs Friday when the plant was closed.
The announcement was made Friday by Swift & Co., which has operated the cattle processing plant at 3611 E. Amity since 2002. Until then, it was owned by ConAgra Beef Co.
It was bad news for the Nampa economy and the laid-off workers but good news to residents of a nearby housing subdivision who had been trying to get government help to reduce odors from the plant.
Jim Herlihy, a spokesman for Swift & Co., said the closure would idle 408 workers, most of them hourly workers who earn about $28,000 a year. Herlihy said the plant was closed "because of market conditions and our inability to secure enough cattle to support operations."
