Montana farmers poised to harvest profit from carbon ‘crop’. Conservation practice might boost pocketbook

Other than cattle and grain prices, weather is probably the most frequently discussed topic in ranch and farm country.
Soon there might be a way for agricultural producers to help efforts to improve the weather and bring in a little extra income at the same time.
The Butte-based National Carbon Offset Coalition is working on a pilot project to link industries that produce carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, with landowners and others who store carbon in the ground through conservation practices.
"This may be a way for producers to get paid to do something they already practice," said Richard Owen, executive vice president of the Montana Grain Growers Association.
