Montana educators brainstorm ways to inject Indian culture into classroom
Carrie Drye held up a jingle dress. The Arlee grade school teacher shook it, pleased with the sound.
The non-Indian woman showed the dress to teachers as she unveiled a lesson plan based on the book "Jingle Dancer," by Cynthia Leitich Smith. It is a story of an urban Muscogee girl who wants to be a jingle dress dancer but has no jingles.
Drye’s lesson plan will be included in a growing list of curricula being developed from sources around Montana through the Office of Public Instruction’s Indian Education Office.
"When school starts, there will be a rich abundance of material teachers can draw from when they start transforming their classroom process," said Denise Juneau, Indian Education Office director.
