The oil boom is changing towns in eastern Montana and North Dakota faster than basic services and infrastructure can keep up. But once the dust settles, will the payoff be worth its price?
In eastern Montana the oil boom has a buzz you can feel. It’s big and smelly, loud and wealthy. Nobody knows how big it’s going to get, but few think it’s going away. This boom grew big legs in North Dakota, and it’s looking west, where it’s already got people scrambling just to keep up.
