Editorial: Maintaining research standing vital for MSU, community
The departure of Tom McCoy, 15-year veteran vice president for research at Montana State University, is stirring up some anxiety on the MSU campus.
And with good reason.
Under McCoy’s leadership, MSU has emerged as a top-tier research university, according to the Carnegie Foundation, one of just 108 in the nation. And grant-funded spending research on campus has doubled during McCoy’s tenure to where it has topped $100 million in five of the last eight years.
Replacing McCoy will be difficult. Finding someone with the drive and ability to continue that record is will be a challenge for MSU administrators.
And the anxiety that generates should extend far beyond the MSU campus.
