Developing Air Services in Rural States – The lessons to be learned from Sioux Falls, South Dakota

Sioux Falls is a booming business and medical center in southeastern South Dakota. Its metro area grew by 22 percent to 228,261 in the last decade.

But community officials realized several years ago that many of the city’s air passengers were rebelling against a captive market that lacked enough competition and were driving three hours to Omaha or four-and-half hours to Minneapolis to snare discount fares.
