University of Montana ‘big data’ certificate earned by 7 students has recruiters lining up

"Technology is capable of creating data in such a large volume that traditional techniques like spreadsheets and statistical packages can’t handle it," said Lee Tangedahl, chair of UM’s Management Information Systems program. "So big data is something that requires a new set of tools and it’s both big in volume and big in speed. Like the Internet, you’re talking about thousands of transactions going by a second. Or Twitter. It’s huge and it’s fast. So we need new methods to handle it. It’s the same thing we’ve always been doing, analyzing the data statistically, but we need new tools now that the data has such high volume and speed."

This May, seven UM students will be the first to graduate with a certificate in data analytics. Two of the students major in math, one is in computer science and four – including Starkey – are in management information systems.
