No phone or internet: Company sale leaves some rural Yellowstone County residents offline

January 3, 2018

Dave Schmit has not had a working home phone or internet access since Friday, and he's starting to get frustrated.

Schmit lives out on 88th Street West and last week got a notice in the mail that his telecom provider, Nebraska-based USA Communications, had sold its Montana operations to Wyoming-based TCT. Shortly after, Schmit's internet and phone lines went dead.

Complicating matters, telecom providers are required by the Montana Public Service Commission to give 30 days notice when they buy a company or otherwise begin operation in the state.

TCT gave the Public Service Commission no such notice.
