Growing up, my brother and I knew well the story of our family's Depression-era trials, when my dad and his brothers, sister and parents lived in an abandoned filling station.
There was simply nowhere else for them to go.
Those years forever changed everyone in my family, including those of us who were not born for another decade or two. As they were passed down, from one generation to the next, the stories made us mindful never to take the good times for granted - and always to be prepared, should those tougher days return.
Now they have.
