Analyzing Montana’s modern economy

April 19, 2008

The Madison County Courthouse in Virginia City was built in 1876, and it’s still a working structure, though it stands in a town that has become largely a tourist attraction, a place where, in the winter, a dog can enjoy a long nap on the main avenue.

Earlier this month, Tim and Edra Blixseth butted legal heads in that courthouse, vying for control of the Yellowstone Club and attracting a dozen lawyers, which equals almost 10 percent of the town’s population.

The proceedings seemed an apt metaphor for Montana’s modern economy: all those suits, arguing over so much money, surrounded by all that history.
