Ribbit debuts as “Silicon Valley’s phone company”

December 17, 2007

I met with the top executives at Ribbit http://www.ribbit.com/ last week and found their strategy to be eye-opening. The Mountain View company, which bills itself as “Silicon Valley’s phone company,” is making it easy to embed web phones in just about any kind of web site, blog, or social networking page.

The company’s software is like a telecom switch, mediating communication across different kinds of networks. Ribbit, which is coming out of stealth mode, says it has more than 600 developers working on developing telephone applications that are integrated tightly with business and consumer web applications. http://www.Salesforce.com, for instance, is integrating the Ribbit phone functionality into sales contact applications.

“We think the industry needs a new type of phone company,” said Ted Griggs, CEO of Ribbit.
