A down-to-earth town for ski lovers. Big Sky, Montana

The brainchild of Chet Huntley, the late NBC News anchor, Big Sky Resort http://www.bigskymontana.org/ was born in 1973, when the enterprising retired newscaster began transforming the tiny town at 7,500 feet between southwestern Montana's Spanish Peaks and Gallatin and Madison mountain ranges into a favorite ski destination.

Though it is an area built on snow, these days Big Sky is much more than a winter playground. It is a year-round resort where the vast majority of residences are second homes.

Whitefish Mountain Resort: an old favorite with a new name

A full 60 years ago, a handful of Whitefish locals strung a line of chairlifts not far from town, named it Big Mountain http://www.bigmtn.com/ and started selling tickets.

Were those old-timers to return this year, with their woolies and 8-foot hickories, you have to wonder whether they would recognize their 1947 mountain, or even find their way to the lifts.
