The 500 were selected from the Corporate Research Board's database of 19 million U.S. businesses. About 95,000 businesses met the magazine's criteria.
To be considered, a business must have been started between 1998 and 2002, had sales of more than a $1 million in 2002, and shown positive job growth between 2002 and 2006.
