Preserving Red Lodge: Mountain town working to stay on top of growth

Red Lodge has come a long way since its days as a rough-and-tumble coal mining town. Its scenic location, historic flavor and proximity to Yellowstone Park have made it attractive to many newcomers. Now newcomers and natives alike are working hard to avoid the pitfalls of too-rapid development - to preserve the community's attractiveness as the town grows and changes. Today, Monday and Tuesday, The Gazette's Lorna Thackeray and James Woodcock take readers to Red Lodge to hear from residents how they are working to shape their future.

No one got ill, no evidence of any additional coliform contamination has shown up and the owner says he has fixed the problem at the spring near Red Lodge.

Kevin Olson, owner of Yellowstone Ice & Water in Billings, says he has provided the required five samples of spring water to the Montana Department of Environmental Quality and all five tested clean.

However, instead of allowing the company to resume the sale of Red Lodge Spring Water, the DEQ's Helena office has asked for two more tests.

That has Olson upset.
