Purity Systems "cleaning up in Montana".

In 1987, two Missoula entrepreneurs decided they wanted to create a technology to purify drinking water, and Purity Systems http://www.puritysystemsinc.com/about.html was born. But it wasn’t until they took it to the University of Montana Department of Chemistry that they found out its applications extend far beyond that.

Purity Systems cleans contaminates out of water and extracts the valuable metals. This means the clean-ups of hundreds of acid mine drainage sites in Montana could one day pay for themselves.

"It could be used to help pay for the environmental remediations so that, for instance, in the Berkley Pit or places like that we could pull out the copper and zinc and manganese that are worth something, and in the process, neutralize the water and make it cleaner," said Edward Rosenberg, Chair of the Department of Chemistry.

The small start up company is looking at business opportunities in South Africa, Australia and China, but Dr. Rosenberg says the heart of the company is in Montana.

"Our ultimate goal is to actually manufacture here in Montana and so you’d be looking at a fairly large manufacturing plant somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 tons a year or more. The potential market for these kinds of products is in the billions of dollars,” said Rosenberg.

He says the next step is to sell the product in bulk to mining companies, and possibly use it at stainless steel manufacturing plants.
