Sunburst Sensors – Underwater Carbon Dioxide sensors are a hot commodity for oceanographers

Underwater Carbon Dioxide sensors are a hot commodity for oceanographers, and Sunburst Sensors http://www.sunburstsensors.com/ in Missoula is one of only two businesses world wide that makes and sells them. The sensors measure CO2 underwater, helping scientists learn how the earth’s warming affects our environment.

In Montana, Degrandpre’s graduate students are developing new sensors to measure pH and alkalinity.

"Both of those are of great interest in water quality monitoring in general, so they have a broader market than CO2," said Mike Degrandpre, co-owner of Sunburst Sensors http://www.umt.edu/chemistry/faculty/degrandpre.htm .

Students will test the sensors this summer in the Clark Fork River before the Milltown Dam is removed, and afterwards to measure the difference in water quality.

"I’d like to have Sunburst grow into a significant company so that we can have more high-tech business in Montana and in Missoula specifically," said Degrandpre.

Degrandpre hopes the pH and alkalinity sensors will be a spin-off technology to market in the near future.
