The Chicago-based company will discontinue operations at a corrugated container plant in San Jose, Calif., and at sheet plants in Louisville and Temple, Texas.

Earlier this week, it said it would close a plant in Anderson, Ind., resulting in the loss of 143 jobs.

Smurfit-Stone cited market conditions for the cuts and said existing business from the four plants will be moved to nearby company facilities.

Smurfit-Stone had more than 38,000 employees before starting a round of cost cuts last year that included plant closures in Milwaukee; Spartanburg, S.C.; and Ft. Smith, Ark. The company currently has about 37,500 employees worldwide.
