Longtime MSU technician reflects on internet’s origins – The Dark Ages

More than 30,000 people visit Montana State University’s homepage on a typical day in 2018, and they can thank Mike Hitch for its iconic and easily remembered web address — http://www.montana.edu.

Hitch, a 45-year veteran of MSU’s University Information Technology, registering the address in 1988, when the internet as we know it today didn’t exist.

"There were no (web) browsers," Hitch recently recalled of that time. "(The internet) was just for sending email and connecting with other computers. There was nothing to look at."
