Bozeman High’s brightest debate ‘sacrificing yourself to the college gods’

College-bound high school students can feel a lot of pressure to be successful and build their resumes, and perhaps no one understands that pressure as well as the nine Bozeman High School students named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists.

Ruby Lenard said in her junior year, when she took the Preliminary SAT college-prep test — which qualifies less than 1 percent of U.S. students for prestigious National Merit Scholarships — she felt overwhelmed by all her activities and classwork.

"You do not have an ounce of free time," Lenard said. "You have to sacrifice yourself to the college gods."
