Wyoming’s local governments push for more stable funding

Every two years, local government leaders across Wyoming hold their breath as they wait for state legislators to approve their funding.

Wyoming does not grant cities, towns or counties independent taxing authority, which leaves Wyoming’s municipalities largely dependent on direct distribution dollars from the state. Given the state’s boom-or-bust economy, local leaders often wonder each state budget cycle how much money they will receive.

"It was so stressful [being uncertain]," Councilwoman Kenyne Humphrey told the Star-Tribune last spring.
