Mining City History: The Finlen, formerly the McDermott, was always elegant

The Finlen Hotel, inspired by the Astor Hotel in New York City, opened in Uptown Butte on New Year’s Day in 1924 as one of the most elegant hotels between Minneapolis and Seattle.

The new Finlen opened on January 1, 1924, and like its predecessor hosted notable visitors to Butte, including Senator John F. Kennedy, Charles Lindbergh, and Harry Truman. Rooms went for $2.50 a night in 1948.
