25 green start-ups that are changing the world including Idaho’s Solar Roadways

We proudly present the 25 start-ups that are still in the running to win €500,000 in the Postcode Lottery Green Challenge 2018. These innovative businesses have been chosen by our preliminary jury out of 845 applications from 100 countries, and we are delighted to see entrepreneurs from all over the world making it into the top 25.

The diverse group of start-ups that have made it into the list of this year’s nominations include plans to stop plastic reaching the sea, to make storage of renewable energy more efficient and to combat water scarcity around the world. They show the broad range of ways businesses can have a positive impact on the planet, while also being successful.

Solar Roadways® http://www.solarroadways.com/ is a modular system of specially engineered solar panels that can be walked and driven upon. The panels contain LED lights to create lines and signage without paint, and heating elements to prevent snow and ice accumulation. The panels have microprocessors, which makes them intelligent and allows the panels to communicate with each other, a central control station, and vehicles.

As well as generating power, Solar Roadway is an electric road that can recharge electric vehicles (EVs) anywhere. It could charge EVs while they are traveling (dynamic charging), which would increase their range and means that EVs can charge on sunshine rather than fossil fuels as many of them now do.
