$18.6 million energy efficiency money approved for buildings in the Northwest

An Oregon-based nonprofit energy group has approved $18.6 million for programs to improve the energy efficiency of buildings in the Northwest.

The three-year effort by the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance http://www.nwalliance.org/ is expected to save 31 average megawatts of electricity in the region by 2015 at a cost of less than a penny per kilowatt-hour, spokeswoman Stacey Hobart said.

An average megawatt is the amount of electricity needed to power about 700 Northwest homes for a year.

Building types to be targeted under the effort include health care facilities and hospitals, grocery stores, and commercial real estate such as office buildings.
