President Seth Bodnar Convenes the University of Montana Planning Committee to develop a clear and intentional course for our University.

I am pleased to announce the next step in our effort to reinvigorate the University Planning Committee (UPC). As I mentioned in my presentations to campus in January, it is time now to build upon the important work of APASP, the SPCC, and others, and align on a clear and intentional course for our University.

Working with our Shared Governance leaders, I am inviting the UPC to begin work immediately with the following charge:

Examine our current mission and propose changes to ensure a concise, clear, and compelling University of Montana Mission Statement.

Draft a clear, intentional, and integrated strategic plan for immediate action; the plan should include areas of focus and areas we will choose not to sustain, both programmatically and structurally given our fiscal constraints.

Propose an improved planning and assessment mechanism for continued strategic thinking and improvement.

As I mentioned in presentations last week, I expect the UPC to complete the first two actions in its charge before the end of this semester. The third will be a longer term and ongoing effort. In time, I will transition leadership of the UPC to our permanent Provost, though I plan to remain active in the vital work of this committee.

We want you to engage as well. We will update the current UPC webpage with the membership and regularly post the agendas, minutes, and other pertinent information to enable everyone to see where we are with this important work. Leana Schelvan, Director of Communications in the W.A. Franke of College of Forestry and Conservation, will be assisting UPC with an effective communications plan to keep everyone informed about the work of the committee. I hope you will follow the work of the UPC and provide your ideas to the conversation.

Sincerely,

Seth Bodnar, President
