Montana tax policy lagging behind economic shifts, report says
Montana’s tax policy is outdated and does not reflect recent changes to the state’s economy, which has seen a marked shift away from non-service jobs such as manufacturing and farming to service-based industries such as health care and hospitality.
That’s according to a report prepared by Bozeman think tank Headwaters Economics for the state Legislature’s Joint Subcommittee on The Changing Economy and Impacts to the Long-Term Viability of Montana’s Tax Structure.
“An over-reliance on resource taxes may be generating a gap between where the economy is generating value and where the state generates revenue,” the Headwaters report reads.
