West Virginia Elk Herd Inspires Hopes of Economic Renewal, if not Ecological Redemption

The Mountain State’s reintroduced elk herd has survived its first year on the grassy habitat of old strip mines. Hunters and businesspeople look forward to the day when the animal’s numbers are sufficient to allow West Virginians to hunt elk there for the first time in more than 150 years.
