Great Falls, Montana Immersion Program teaches Native history, culture to improve attendance, graduation

Samantha Henderson starts her school day with a smudge ceremony.
A year ago, she was living on her own, wondering each night where she would sleep. At 14, she was taking care of her younger brother, who looked forward to going to elementary school because he knew he would get breakfast.
She – like many of the 30 students in the Great Falls Public Schools’ Immersion Program – stopped going to school.
"We all come from a bad place," Henderson said.
"Now I hate leaving school at the end of the day," said Antonio Spearson.
