Literacy Bitterroot has no collaboration plans with Missoula County Literacy

"It was not our determination to take it away from local control and put it into regional – that was what the feds had decided."

Literacy Bitterroot plans to continue education as usual. The program helps adults to pass a High School Equivalency Test (HiSET) by improving their skills in reading, writing and math. It serves around 200 students throughout Ravalli County.

No plan was set when Missoula County Literacy came to Hamilton, Tuesday, and met with Literacy Bitterroot about how to collaborate on providing services in Ravalli County.

Missoula County Literacy was awarded the Montana Office of Public Instruction grant for Adult Education services and has to provide services for the Montana Association of Counties (MACO) in district 11 that is Missoula, Mineral, and Ravalli Counties to meet the grant requirements.

Literacy Bitterroot loses out on federal grant

Ravalli County Commissioners and Literacy Bitterroot representatives remain frustrated with the Montana Office of Public Instruction about the lack of funding for adult learning in the local community.

The grant money through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunities Act (WIOA) for Literacy Bitterroot was awarded to Missoula County as part of a regionalization push from the federal government. The grant helps train adults to pass a high-school equivalency test, which formerly was called a GED, or general educational development certificate.

Last year, Literacy Bitterroot received $65,000 through the program.
