University of Montana president candidate Charles "Chuck" Ambrose says he’d put enrollment first

Charles "Chuck" Ambrose said it’s an urgent and challenging time for higher education, especially because it’s clear the public believes a degree costs too much.

"We know the transcendent nature of what a degree means in this world, but we’re up against some headwinds on the basis of what people perceive," Ambrose said, who visited the University of Montana on Monday.

The president of the University of Central Missouri is the last of four candidates for UM president to make a presentation in Missoula.

UM presidential candidate Chuck Ambrose emphasizes student prioritization at public forum

University of Montana presidential candidate Chuck Ambrose spoke at an open forum Monday in the UC Theater about creating a sustainable future for UM by increasing efficiencies in the budget and prioritizing students.

Ambrose is currently the president of the University of Central Missouri. After a 20-year-long presidential career, Ambrose believes he could bring new ideas and productivity to UM concerning enrollment issues due to his experience with budget cuts and static enrollment at UCM.

UM presidential candidate Charles Ambrose is transparent about big changes

Chuck Ambrose, a finalist for the University of Montana presidency, says he knows his way around budget shortfalls and enrollment issues.

While he has found success as the president of the University of Central Missouri, Ambrose doesn’t know how the methods he has used there will translate to UM. He wants to ensure the character of the school doesn’t disappear.

"As creative as we’ve been at the University of Central Missouri, we’ll never be the University of Montana," Ambrose said.

UM Presidential Finalist: Charles Ambrose

Ambrose says one of the biggest challenges at UM will be managing its budget shortfalls, but he’s already been to that dance at his previous universities, and was recognized by President Obama for his innovative programs.

"Probably the most humbling experience I’ve had as a college president," says Ambrose. “Is to have the President of the United States call out a program that you’ve created and be able to explain it to the world better than you can. So that was pretty cool."

Ambrose took questions today at an on-campus forum, with a lot of focus on increasing enrollment, something he says would cost money, but would be money well-spent.

"Whether that be in marketing branding admissions or financial aid, you have to have the resources in place to grow. And that’s an investment," says Ambrose.
