Missoulian Editorial – Gianforte needs to make a clean start, beginning now

Greg Gianforte will be sworn in Wednesday as Montana’s lone representative in the U.S. House of Representatives, pledging to "bear true faith” to the Constitution.

We appreciate the fact that, before he headed to Washington, he formally apologized for physically attacking Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs, issued a statement accepting "full responsibility” for his actions and pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault instead of pleading no contest to the criminal charge.

But there is one more thing the man who will become Montana’s sole voice in the House needs to do to clear the air.

He must explain why his campaign, which speaks for him, put out a statement after the attack that lied about what happened and blamed the reporter that Gianforte has now admitted was the real victim.

Why does this matter?

Because truth matters.
