Missoulian editorial – Montana should focus on expanding financial aid for college students in need

Last month, the Montana Board of Regents voted to raise tuition for most universities and colleges in the state. The increases, while modest, still mean that a larger number of prospective students, both resident and non-resident, will not be able to afford higher education in Montana.

It’s as good a time as any for Montana to re-evaluate the way it supports college and university students in need. With the costs of education on the rise, and enrollment at the University of Montana and other campuses on the decline, revamping financial incentives for students could go a long way toward attracting and retaining the next generation of Montanans.
