Livingston printer pays software fine

PrintingForLess.com, a printing company headquartered in Livingston, has paid $40,000 to the Business Software Alliance, a watchdog group representing the nation’s leading software manufacturers.

The settlement came after a self-audit revealed more copies of Adobe and Microsoft software programs on the printing company’s computers than it had licenses to support.

In addition to making its payment, the company agreed to delete any unlicensed copies, purchase replacement software and strengthen its software management practices.

BSA contacted PrintingForLess.com through its attorneys. It cooperated with BSA and voluntarily conducted a self-audit, BSA officials said.

The alliance this year has collected more than $3.1 million from 37 United States companies for software violations.

"PrintingForLess.com respects the copyright laws and has implemented a software management program to prevent the reoccurrence of this unfortunate clerical error," said Jeff Batton of PrintingForLess.com. "We’ve emphasized to our employees that copyright infringement is unacceptable."

During 2002, BSA said software piracy cost the U.S. economy more than 105,000 jobs, more than $5.3 billion in lost wages and more than $1.4 billion in federal and state taxes.
