Montgomery Distillery to open concert venue on top of Missoula’s Mount Sentinel

"Not only will this be the largest venue in Montana, accommodating roughly 30,000 concert-goers, but it will definitely be the highest in elevation," Montgomery says. "We’re going to be literally looking down on everyone."

At 5,157 feet, the top of Mount Sentinel is just under a mile high. Big Sky Brewing Co. on the valley floor, which this week unveiled plans for a new amphitheater, is 3,200 feet in elevation. Bonner, where the KettleHouse Amphitheater is being dug, is at roughly 3,400 feet.

"We’re still not 100 percent sure who owns Mount Sentinel, so that’s job No. 1," he says. "It has a giant white ‘M’ on it, so my best guess is either the city of Missoula or the state of Montana. It could be Michigan, but I think that’s unlikely. The nice part is, once it’s owned by Montgomery, we can totally still use that M."

Getting concert-goers to the top of the steep mountain is "not a problem," says Montgomery, who "fell in love with funiculars while birdwatching in the Alps and plans to install one on the side of the mountain for less athletic customers."
