New Montana school would turn fishing guides into knowledge guides

When trying to change people’s habits, sometimes it takes a little education. To convince an independent-minded group like fishing guides to change, it might also take a few inspiring role models.

Up until now, young guides didn’t have many chances to get some pointers from older anglers like Lincoln-based outfitter Paul Roos. But they’d likely see Roos and others wading into contentious issues to speak for the rivers. It’s a habit Roos picked up about the time he started his Blackfoot River outfitting company in 1970, and it’s been impossible to kick.

Gallatin River guide Sean Blaine and Yellowstone River guide Brant Oswald want to create the first advanced guide school in the nation where intermediate-level guides can polish their technique with masters like Roos but also learn the latest environmental science from researchers.
