‘The Last Best Chance’ to Restore an Ecosystem – Montana’s American Prairie Preserve

With equal parts vision and pragmatism, the American Prairie Preserve https://www.americanprairie.org/ attempts to create the largest-scale conservation project in North America. The plan includes the purchase of private lands, easements for public lands, and efforts to share economic benefits with local residents.

"I would boil it down to a single line. How would you like to have had the opportunity to be a co-founder of Yellowstone National Park? This is an opportunity that is personally attractive both because of the scale and the chance to do something for all time — not for the credit but for the satisfaction of doing it." George Matelich, a managing director of New York-based private equity firm Kelso & Co.

"We founded, and are the owner of, our Wild Sky beef brand http://wildskybeef.org/ so local ranchers could also benefit" from APR’s conservation efforts, Parker said. "Ranchers who participate get paid an annual premium for conservation practices, modeled on the same conservation impact score we use on our own lands."
