Despite governor’s budget, universities hope to continue tuition freeze

For the first time in four years, Gov. Steve Bullock has not included a tuition freeze for in-state students attending Montana University System institutions in his proposed budget, leaving many students worried they may face increased costs.

Instead, Bullock has proposed about $14 million in cuts across the state’s university system, according to Kenzie Lombardi, student political action director of the Associated Students of the University of Montana. This is a major shift, Lombardi said, from the last two budget cycles where the state increased funding for higher education so long as the institutions did not increase tuition for Montana students.
