Smith River markets itself as float applications rise

Celebrated for its spectacular scenery, remote location and excellent trout fishing, the Smith River has become Montana’s most sought-after outdoor recreation experience.

Permit applications http://stateparks.mt.gov/smith-river/ to float the widely popular Smith River in 2017 will be available beginning Tuesday.

The deadline to apply is Feb. 16.

Permits are issued each year through a lottery. Drawing results will be announced March 2.

"I wouldn’t be surprised if we exceed the number of applications again this year," said Colin Maas of Montana State Parks, the manager of the Smith River State Park. "It kind of markets itself anymore."
