Native American votes total 8 percent of Montana’s total and could decide some races

Once a seemingly forgotten slice of Montana’s voting population, candidates running for and elected to Congress are focusing more attention on people from the state’s seven Indian reservations and the state-recognized Little Shell Tribe, where residents often struggle with alcoholism, poverty, unemployment and crime. In Montana, the Indian population is growing faster than the white population and now makes up about 8 percent of its 1 million residents.
