Guest column: Missoula needs permanent, not temporary, downtown dwellers

With all the news about turning the Merc into a hotel, I feel it’s time for me to speak up. I’m going on record that I oppose removing the current structure to build a hotel.

It’s not so much that I’m an historical advocate, although I don’t see why the facade can’t be preserved with any future development. But I am opposed to developing our downtown for tourists rather than for residents.
