Lolo-Missoula bike trail opening ‘culmination of a really long dream’

"It’s like the culmination of a really long dream," Adventure Cycling travel initiatives director Ginny Sullivan said to a crowd of Spandex-clad cyclists at Travelers’ Rest on Saturday afternoon.

The festivities also marked a beginning.

It was the inaugural Bitterroot Trail ride, one that organizers hope to make an annual event from now on.

And fundraising is underway to maintain the trail, spearheaded by the Bitterroot Trail Preservation Alliance https://bitterroottrail.com/bitterroot-trail-preservation-alliance .

Pedaling through Missoula for 40 years

Since 1982, Greg Siple, co-founder of Bikecentennial, the precursor of Adventure Travel, has photographed the wonderful parade of cross-country bicycle tourists who make the Adventure Cycling office in Missoula a stop on their itinerary. On this, the 40th anniversary of the route being established, Siple has combed through his negatives for this sampling of the diversity of riders and their impressions from riding the trail in their own words.
