Girls encouraged to get involved in STEM in Missoula

A recent report by the American Association of University Women seems to show that young women doubt their abilities to succeed as scientists. STEM workshops in Montana are working to change that doubt to get more girls involved in science.

"I think it’s important for them to get involved with STEM at a young age because a lot of times I think young women can’t really picture themselves being a scientist, and that’s really important for them to be able to actually dream of being a scientist. And so, at a young age, it’s really important for them to see role models and to get to talk to other young women who are interested so that they can eventually have the confidence to go into the STEM fields," Hellgate High School student Shelby Kinch said.

Kinch helps conduct research at UM on neuroblastoma, a rare and lethal form of child cancer. Saturday’s STEM workshops were part of the 3rd annual Expanding Your Horizons Conference.
