Dire straits: Calls sounded to save MSE in Butte

On the south edge of Butte, before the Harrison Avenue drag of stores and car dealerships and fast-foot joints gets started, sits a cluster of large, earth-tone buildings now known as MSE.

They’ve been there for decades, borne initially as a joint venture between the federal government and a not-for-profit group created to test magnetohydrodynamics — an experiment to burn coal more efficiently at high temperatures. It’s commonly called "clean coal technology."

About $168 million was spent building the facility and the infrastructure that serves it.

But ask most anyone in Butte to describe what the facility does now, or even did back in the day, and chances are you’ll get a blank stare.

"It is our number-one priority — absolute number one," said BLDC Executive Director Pam Haxby-Cote. "We are doing everything possible that this organization and its board of directors can do … to retain this company and grow it because there is real potential, real talent out there."
