Montana prep teams rev up Formula 1 competition

On Thursday, March 24th and Friday March 26th, Montana Tech and Highlands College in Butte, together with OPI 21st CCLC and SAE International hosted the 2nd ANNUAL F1 IN SCHOOLS – MONTANA REGIONAL competition. Ten high schools from all across Montana participated in what is to be one of the state’s best educational competitions.

"Just having a fast car does not mean you win," said Ken Francis of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a senior program developer for SAE International — Society of Automotive Engineers http://www.sae.org/ , of the motor oil industry. He was in town overseeing a dozen Montana high school teams learning the F1 ropes, so to speak.

Model Formula 1 racing car in hand, Drummond Racing is cranking up and revving its engines.

"It’s our first year, so we’re learning a lot," said Bridgette Perry, volunteer assistant coach for the Drummond team, comprised of all freshmen.

The newbie squad was in town for the 2016 F1 in Schools Challenge at Montana Tech on Friday. Ultimately, they race a unique miniature car on a straight-away track sporting a sleek digital timer, but not until after much more well-rounded work on the project.

The project encompasses a wide range of skills students must master in order to score high and possibly advance from the state level to nationals — then maybe to worlds.
