University of Montana President Royce Engstrom to give raise to leadership scholarship

Faced with criticism about University of Montana’s budget cuts and declining enrollment, University President Royce Engstrom says he will dedicate his recent raise to a leadership scholarship.

Engstrom said Wednesday during his midyear update to the campus that he will dedicate the $6,093 difference between his current salary and his approved raise to helping a student. The Board of Regents approved increasing Engstrom’s salary to $309,207, from $303,144 on Jan. 19.

UM President Engstrom gives mid-year report

Under the shadow of budget cuts and layoffs, University of Montana President Royce Engstrom delivered his mid-year report Wednesday evening.

While he did acknowledge the elephant in the room, Engstrom opted to place most of the focus on positive changes he hopes to bring to the university.

It’s been nearly three months since Engstrom announced a plan to cut more than 200 full time positions, a move the administration deemed necessary to counter a loss in tuition revenue due to decreased enrollment.
