Montana Senator Jon Tester brings famed DeLorean sports car back to the future

Senator’s Highway Bill provision reduces burden on small auto manufacturers

(U.S. Senate) – Thanks to car enthusiast and U.S. Senator Jon Tester, the DeLorean Motor Company is bringing its famed DMC-12 model sports car back for future car buyers to enjoy.

Tester successfully included a provision in last month’s Highway Bill that provides greater flexibility for small auto manufacturers to produce replica cars. Previously, all auto manufactures, regardless if they produced a million cars a year or a few, were subject to the same regulations. Small auto manufacturers expressed frustration with the rules saying they were too burdensome.

As a result of Tester’s work, the DeLorean Motor Company announced http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/back-future-delorean-going-back-production-after-34-year-break-n505271?cid=sm_fb yesterday that it will again produce the car made famous in the Back to the Future movie franchise.

"While these DeLoreans still need a few modifications to be ready for time travel, bringing these cars back to the future ensures that more Americans can enjoy them," said Tester. "Reducing government regulation and creating good-paying American manufacturing jobs are essential if we want to accelerate growth, increase economic capacity, and ensure our financial future isn’t in flux."

Tester added that while the DeLorean’s potential $100,000 price tag is out of his budget, he is encouraging those who can afford it to come to Montana and test out the state’s newly increased speed limit.

"I want to remind folks that the speed limit in Montana is 80 miles per hour, not 88," Tester remarked.

As a car enthusiast, Tester and his son have fun working on a small collection of vehicles from the 30s, 40s, and 50s.

The Highway Bill that was signed into law http://www.tester.senate.gov/?p=press_release&id=4228 last month also invests nearly $2.3 billion in Montana’s transportation infrastructure.
